Groundhogs: Weather Forcaster or Wildlife Pest?

Groundhogs, also known as Woodchucks, are a rodent from the family Sciuridae. They belong to the large group of ground squirrels known as marmots. Groundhogs are lowland creatures found throughout Canada, eastern U.S.A and even into Alaska


Dealing with groundhogs can be a real headache for property owners. While they may look harmless, these animals can cause significant damage to yards and even to a home’s foundation. Their extensive tunnel systems can ruin gardens, weaken soil, and create costly structural issues. If you’re facing a groundhog problem, addressing it promptly is key to preventing further damage.


Like most pests & wildlife, groundhogs are drawn to areas where they can easily find the food and shelter they like most. Your yard may be a safe haven from predators while providing a delicious buffet via your garden or compost pile. 


Signs of Groundhog Activity

Groundhogs are active during the day so you might actually see the groundhog on your property, however if you are not seeing a critter yet know you have a problem here are some signs that it may indeed be a groundhog.

                             

✅ Burrows, or their homes, can be identified by large holes or entrances with mounds of dirt around them. Groundhogs often have multiple entrances into their homes.

✅ You may notice damaged or chewed vegetables, flowers, or other garden plants on your property.

✅ You may see animal tracks. Groundhog tracks are small with the front paw having four toes while the back paws have five toes. 


If you are seeing these signs it is advised that you take action as soon as you can. Ignoring any pest or wildlife issue, increases the risk of damage to your property and the expense of dealing with the issue.
